Posted on: July 19th, 2008 Improving Portraits with Portrait Professional

I found this interesting software called Portrait Professional which takes out a lot of the Photoshopping effort to improve on a portrait image. At first I was skeptical about its capabilities, but fortunately they do provide for a demo version. The demo version has the full functionality, except that you can’t save the output image.

Anyway I gave it a try. Here is the original picture:

And here is the picture tweaked by Portrait Professional.

Not bad actually.

Posted on: June 18th, 2008 Firefox 3.0 released

In an attempt to garner a Guiness World Record, Mozilla assigned June 17 as the Firefox Download Day. However, it appears that they underestimated the volume of download requests. The Firefox blog reports that “the outpouring of interest and enthusiasm around Firefox 3 has been overwhelming (literally!)” and that their servers are “currently feeling the burn.”

Fortunately, as I write this entry, I am able to download the Mac version of Firefox.

I am not too concerned about participating in the attempt to set a download record. I have been using the beta version of Firefox 3 so I just want to make sure I am using the official version.

So what are you waiting for? It’s free. Download it now.

Posted on: June 12th, 2008 Why you should keep Wordpress up-to-date

Techcrunch explains:

Due to its popularity as a blogging platform, Wordpress has become a prime target for hackers looking to take over blogs for search-engine optimization (SEO) of other sites they control, traffic-redirection and other purposes. Recently there have been a spate of automated attacks which take advantage of recently discovered security vulnerabilities in Wordpress.

To date, Wordpress has been keeping up with the security holes by releasing updates within a few days of new exploits being found, but in the past few days new exploits have appeared that nobody seems to have answers for.

The article goes on the explain how one of its hosted blogs was hacked and hijacked, turning the front page into a billboard for pharmaceuticals and adult products.

Posted on: April 27th, 2008 What DVDs to bring on a long trip?

I am booked for a 5-day stay in London and now in the midst of preparing for a long 18-hour plane ride. I have several podcasts loaded, an audible book ready, and am now in the process of ripping a few DVDs to watch on the place and in the hotel. The question is: which DVDs should I rip?

As I write this, Mac The Ripper is ripping “The Shawshank Redepmtion” onto my external drive. I am also thinking of ripping “Apocalypse Now Redux,” a DVD that I bought a long time ago in Singapore but never got to watch (I did see the original though). Maybe I’ll also rip the entire “Lord of the Rings” trilogy.

That’s the beauty of Mac The Ripper. Aside from backing up the DVDs, I can watch several movies while on a trip without adding to my luggage load.

Posted on: April 8th, 2008 Writing My Thoughts

I really need to write down my thoughts. For one, I feel I am getting old and my memory is beginning to be spotty. Will I end up senile in my twilight years?

The web post that may be realize this was something that came from the Daily Writing Tips site. Though the author advises a notebook, it may be better for me to keep one using my Macbook Pro. The capability to tag and search for entries, not to mention at least some assurance of confidentiality, is better in a computer. Moreover, I can pound away on the keys with the fire of passion, and then reread and modify it with the coldness of rationality, just so that I could ensure that my entry captures the spirit.

Right now I am pounding away using Journler but since it will, with the coming 2.6 version, be a paid-product, I may also switch to another software. And right now, Circus Ponies’ Notebook is looking mighty interesting. I wish I could relook at it, but my trial period has long expired. I had originally considered Notebook but, at that time, it was hard to beat Journler’s price (free).

Funny, I originally thought this would be a private entry until I realized that I could also post this at several of my weblog sites.

But what do I do if I am suddenly struck with flashes of brillance? I don’t have my computer with me all the time. I guess I will use my Nokia E61i then. At least, with its Bluetooth capability, I can easily export it into Journler.
